As you may remember, we had our first guest blog post this past week by Jennifer Swafford, a Boosterthon teacher in Atlanta, GA. We were so inspired by her story about turning her life around and regaining a healthy lifestyle that we asked her to write another post on how to take the inspiration to be healthier and begin to transform your own life.

We hope Jennifer’s tips help you take action in your health journey.

You may have the motivation either through hearing my story or just being sick and tired of being sick and tired. So, you ask yourself, “What Now?” There are a few simple steps you can take to get your health, and essentially your life, back in order.

Jennifer Swafford smiles for the camera.1. Write down “Why”

First, I would encourage you to sit down and write down WHY you want to get healthy. What are your reasons for doing this? Why are you taking this journey? This is a journey and with all journeys come bumps in the road. You will need this list to refer back to when you are frustrated or discouraged.

2. Calculate your daily caloric range

In order to be successful, you need to know how many calories a day you should be putting into your body. Every person and body type is different and unique. The heavier you are, the more calories you will be able to eat and still lose weight. I have chosen Weight Watchers, which makes it really simple! They give you a daily “points plus” range and all you have to do is stay in that range. If you want to count calories instead of doing Weight Watchers, a fabulous resource to calculate your individual calorie range is the WebMD BMI Plus Calculator.

3. Write It Down

Now that you know how many calories you should be eating in a day, write down EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. Get a cute journal, download a smart phone app, or get out a sheet of paper. Just Do It! You MUST write down everything and stay within your range in order to lose weight. Being AWARE of what is going into your mouth is one of the most important things you can do.

4. Get ActiveTwo women walking and getting active.

This one can be as simple or as complex as you want. Try and do ten minutes of activity every day. If you can do more, great. Now that fall is here, the weather is perfect for outdoor activities. Take the kids with you - they will enjoy it too! Take the dog for a walk – chances are it needs the exercise. Get some alone time and just go for a walk. Stop using “Exer-scuses” and do something to be more active every day!

These are just a few things you can do to get started on your way to a healthier you! Before you know it, days will lead into months, which will lead into a year. This nextyear is going to come and go. What will you do to make yourself better?
