Boosterthon Fun Run School Says, "Hola!" to a New Spanish Program
We are continuing our series on five stories showing how Boosterthon Fun Run schools are practically and creatively using their funds to better their school and their students’ education.
Our second feature school is Kemp Elementary in Powder Springs, Ga.
May 5th marked the third year Kemp Elementary hosted the Boosterthon Fun Run program and the school community celebrated its success. Not only was the Boosterthon Fun Run a huge hit with the faculty and students this year, but last year’s program provided the school with the opportunity to hire a Spanish teacher for two full years!
For many years at Kemp Elementary, parents had been expressing a desire for Spanish classes to be offered in school. With research showing increased cognitive skills, higher achievement in academic areas and higher standardized test scores when introduced to a foreign language in the elementary years, Kemp Elementary knew that a Spanish class would be an incredible addition to their school. However, the school knew that they didn’t remotely have the funding to add a faculty member.
When the school realized that the Boosterthon Fun Run would raise enough funds for a Spanish teacher’s salary and teaching supplies for two years, the principal immediately jumped on the opportunity to add Spanish to the list of “specials.”
It’s been a great first year teaching at Kemp Elementary for Heidi Camacho, a native-Spanish speaker. Every student attends class with Señora Camacho each week to learn the basics of the Spanish language. From the days of the week, to the body parts, each student’s education is expanded as a result of the funds raised and their time in Señora Camacho’s classroom. The students absolutely love having her as a teacher. Funds from this year’s Boosterthon Fun Run will bring back Señora Camacho and the Spanish classes for another two years.
The Boosterthon Fun Run is excited to be back for another year with Kemp Elementary, helping to reach their goals and impact students. “The kids absolutely love the Boosterthon team and get so excited every year. They love the positive attention from the young and enthusiastic team members. Plus, the team is so helpful and flexible,” said Kristen Larocque, the Kemp Foundation representative.
Kemp Elementary has been thrilled to see how hiring Señora Camacho has changed their school for the better. The administration can’t express enough that they would not have been able to reach its goal of hiring a Spanish teacher without the help of the Boosterthon Fun Run.
We look forward to featuring other schools in the upcoming weeks to celebrate a few schools that are achieving with Boosterthon funds.
